With the government shutdown in its fourth week and food stamp benefits ending on November 1, food banks in Queen Creek are preparing for a surge in families needing help—director Theresa G.

Palma from the Mary Gloria Foundation said families have been calling since last Wednesday to gather food in case benefits are not extended.

Family and friends honored 16-year-old Preston Lord with a sunset walk Tuesday night starting at 6 p.m. at the Queen Creek Police Department on Civic Parkway to mark two years since his death — the case spurred local crackdowns on teen violence and changes to state law.
